artist statement
My work consists of assemblage art that delivers opposing ideas and contradictory subject matter. I use light, colorful, sometimes innocent subject matter in my work, but there are always more serious tones that can be found within the pieces. Being appreciative of simplicity, I also enjoy experimenting with themes that don’t necessarily have a directness to them like social issues that may concern topics such as gender or sex. When it comes to introducing these ideas in my work, I like incorporating child-like elements such as bright hues of color and youthful imagery to represent the adult topics.
Lines, whether bold or faint, color, whether heavy or light, and found objects, whether new or old, are the main components of my work. Mixed media plays a significant part in the work I create. Not only do I use traditional media such as acrylic paints, watercolor paints, graphite, and ink, but I also use wood as my foundation and include found objects in my art. Integrating found objects into my pieces seems to give them a sense of life and adds another dimension to the works altogether. It attempts to pull at a deeper meaning and understanding from the ones viewing the work. With the use of repetition, line, and color, I embrace the illusionary aspect of the space.
Visually, I am influenced by pop artists and artists who work in assemblage. I have an appreciation for work that deals with three-dimensional media, bright colors, and popular themes. Incorporating three-dimensional elements into my art gives it a better sense of association with the viewer. Bright colors not only project an impression of the importance of the subject matter but they also become a separate component that can be associated with the other subjects displayed in the work in order to extract some contemplation from the viewer. Conceptually, I aim to use my art as a means of education in which they bring social topics to the foreground of the viewer’s minds.
